What makes a material sustainable? This is where most people fear they will make a mistake. Om careful answers your questions so that you make the best choice for your home.
Sustainable materials can mean a lot of things to a lot of people:
For example Sustainability is defined by www.EPA.gov as:
Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
In the world of construction OM considers a sustainable material to be either a material that can be replenished in greater quantity than its consumption. For example: wood that is properly forested or a material that can be totally recycled or reused: such as steel.
OM Homes Founder Marty Bhatia:
OM Homes uses sustainable materials whenever possible. This is somewhat difficult to do at times because it requires that the material be tracked from its origin. Until recently, getting a supplier to give you the recycled content or birth place of the material was near impossible - It simply wasn't a handy reference.
Buying a more sustainable material can be as simple as buying locally. OM Homes tries to source materials from local businesses whenever possible. We do this because 1) local materials require less fuel to the final destination and 2) We like to support local businesses and our local economy.
Buying sustainable goods is a triple bottom line approach to consuming because it has beneficial impacts on our economy, our society and our environment.
Om Homes is constantly researching, creating relationships with suppliers and interviewing product manufacturers so that we stay current on the newest innovations in sustainable materials. We hope that sharing our knowledge will help you make the best materials decisions for your projects.
